Why Jason Todd Hates Batman |
Why did he transform from the Dark Knight's partner to one of his harshest critics? How did his relationship with Batman deteriorate to the point of hatred?
The Origin of Robin "Jason Todd"
Jason was originally a thief. During one of his heists, he encountered Batman in a battle with the Joker. Despite his young age, he assisted Batman in confronting the Joker.
Although he was arrested for theft, his talent and assistance to Batman impressed Bruce Wayne.
Why Jason Todd Hates Batman |
After his release from prison, Bruce helped him develop his skills and provided him with proper education. He then gave him the Robin suit, making him the new Robin from that day forward.
The Beginning of the Conflict
Jason's approach conflicted with Batman's moral principles. Despite being a good hero, he was extremely violent and reckless in dealing with criminals. He frequently objected to Batman's reprimands for these actions and felt like an assistant rather than a partner.
This conflict escalated when the Joker destroyed a school full of children, prompting Jason to decide to kill the clown.
A Rash Decision
Jason disabled his communicator and tracking device, starting to hunt the Joker on his own, against Batman's wishes. After tracking the Joker's location, Robin arrived at Arkham Asylum. During his attempt to capture him, Jason fell directly into the Joker's trap.
The Joker attacked the trapped Robin, beating him until he lost consciousness, before tying him up and moving him to an abandoned room in the asylum.
Jason was bound to a chair, alone and in constant pain, subjected to routine torture and brainwashing by the Joker.
Unending Torment
The Joker repeatedly told Jason that Batman had abandoned him, planting the idea that Batman was the villain.
Despite the passage of time and Batman's delay in rescuing him, Jason refused to believe it, holding onto the belief that his mentor would save him soon.
A New Robin Assists Batman in Searching for the Old One
Meanwhile, Batman was tirelessly searching for Jason, following any lead that might guide him. Over time, he needed a companion to help in the search. A person named Tim Drake approached him and became the new Robin. Tim believed that Batman needed a Robin for his mental well-being. Bruce reluctantly agreed, and the search for Jason continued.
The Joker's Success in Influencing Jason
This situation played perfectly into the Joker's hands. He obtained photos of Batman with his new replacement and convinced Jason that Batman had abandoned him, finally breaking Jason's spirit.
As the routine torture continued, the Joker ordered other inmates in Arkham to regularly beat Jason and even branded the boy's face with a "J."
Why didn't Batman save Jason Todd?
For six months Batman tried to search for Jason, but he had been bound, alone and miserable, barely holding onto hope for rescue. This hope was shattered when the Joker decided to make the situation worse, ultimately destroying Jason's resolve and Batman's search.
The Joker set up a camera and forced Jason to reveal Batman's identity. The footage showed Jason's breakdown, as he was about to betray Bruce. However, before the boy could speak, the Joker pulled out a gun and shot him.
Batman’s Guilt
After receiving footage of Jason's death, Bruce felt solely responsible, plunging him into deep depression. Batman became more brutal, abandoned the search for Jason, distanced himself from others, especially Tim, and focused more intensely on fighting crime.
Robin Wasn't Dead
Jason was still alive. The Joker had ensured he wore a bulletproof vest during the filming. While the shot had severely injured him, rendering him unconscious and seemingly dead in the footage, Jason later awoke to endure a second phase of psychological torture.
After that, Joker handed Jason over to Harley Quinn, who used her psychological training to manipulate Jason, convincing him that Batman had branded him with the "J." They then administered hallucinogenic drugs to Jason. Harley dubbed him the "Arkham Knight," believing that once Jason killed Batman, she could live happily with the Joker.
Did Jason ever forgive Batman?
Yes, over time, Jason Todd has reconciled with Batman in the main DC continuity. After years of conflict, Jason forgave Batman, and their relationship improved. He even offered to sacrifice himself, demonstrating his renewed commitment to their partnership.
In the animated film "Batman: Under the Red Hood," Jason expresses forgiveness towards Batman for not saving him from the Joker. However, he struggles with the fact that Batman allowed the Joker to live after his death.
Also, at the end of Batman Arkham Knight game we see that Jason helped batman against the scarecrow.
This series of events led to Jason Todd's deep-seated hatred towards Batman. He felt abandoned and betrayed by his mentor, believing that Batman had replaced him without hesitation and failed to save him from the Joker's torment. This perceived betrayal fueled his transformation from a loyal partner into one of Batman's most formidable adversaries.
